Soundscape for Road From Home

Commissioned by the Passaic County Department of Historic & Cultural Affairs

“Soundscape for Road from Home” journeys from the
present backwards through the past before returning. The circuitous
nature of the piece, and its deep roots in various African musical
traditions, explore the idea of traveling both generationally through
the diaspora and geographically through the various places & cultures
that comprise African and African-American history.

The modern drum set plays against the traditional
djembe ensemble as the sections of the piece move from a contemporary
Afro-pop feel to the traditional Susu rhythms of Yankadi and Makru.
When writing this piece I incorporated rhythmic and melodic ideas
drawn directly from Mamady Keita’s djembe recordings. I also wrote
saxophone parts in unison & octaves as a nod to Fela Kuti, the fast
4/4 Makru section being a direct nod to the guitar part of his 1975
song Expensive Shit.

I love working in multimedia contexts & collaborating
with other artists. As a folk musician I’m fascinated by folk music
from all cultures and places, and as a guitarist with a BFA in Jazz
Studies I’m interested in the African roots of the American music I
grew up loving. Seeing Deo Lutwama & John Mubiru’s art proved to be an
exciting & inspiring jumping-off point for my soundscape.
